The start of a new year always sparks enthusiasm for new habits and goals that we want to achieve for the coming year. It is the perfect time for a ‘fresh start’, and to have a good look at our lives and see what areas we want to improve on. Here are a few tips and ideas from us to help you achieve a happier, healthier you and most importantly, how to give you the best chance at actually sticking to these new habits.

1. Be realistic.

Choosing a resolution that you hope to achieve, but you actually know deep down you won’t stick to, is only going to be counterproductive and leave you feeling defeated and disappointed in yourself. Choose goals that are realistic to your lifestyle and income. It is definitely important to aim high, but choosing a goal such as wanting to buy a house in 6 months time when you haven’t yet saved a penny and  have a lot of outgoings, might not be possible for you. Instead, decide to set a goal such as saving a certain amount each month, however much your income will allow, and concentrate on sticking to that goal.

2. Create new habits.

A common goal for the new year is to to exercise more. Many people join their local gym, or start running, but find that a couple of weeks down the line, this habit has slipped and they are back to their old ways. New habits need a minimum of 6 weeks at the very least until they become a way of life for us, so try to keep up your new exercise regime for at least this length of time. If after the 6 weeks is up and you still don’t feel like it is right for you, that’s okay! Don’t beat yourself up about it, try a different form of exercise until you find something that you enjoy enough to make a lifelong habit.

3. Tell your family and friends.

Telling others about your goals will give you encouragement and determination to achieve what you want to this year. Sharing your goals will help you stick to them, as your family and friends will no doubt ask how you are getting on, and you will want to give them a positive answer in return! You can always work together with your family and friends to help stick to your goals. Joining forces with a friend in going to the gym or eating well with your family will give all of you the motivation to achieve your goals together.

4. Have a plan.

It is always a good idea to decide how exactly you are going to achieve your goals this year. Say your aim this year is to save money for buying your first house, a good idea would be to open a savings account, and make sure the same amount goes into it each month. That might mean cutting back on some luxuries, but it will be so worth it to have a home to call your own!

5. Celebrate your achievements!

As well as keeping that strong and determined attitude, it is also so important to celebrate your achievements you have made so far. Remember, you made your new years resolution for a reason, so celebrate when you have done what you set out to do at the beginning of the year. It will give you even more motivation to improve and develop your goals further. Success feeds success, so make this your best year yet!
